Black Sea Tensions Fuel Largest Crop Price Hike Since Invasion

Global agriculture prices have seen their largest quarterly jump since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, rising by 13% last quarter. The increase is attributed to tensions in the Black Sea region and extreme weather events that are affecting crop production.

The Bloomberg Agriculture Spot Index, which tracks key crops such as soybeans and coffee, has jumped to its highest level since March 2022. While the index has eased slightly from its peak last month, it remains up by over 20% compared to this time last year.

Conflict in the Black Sea region is disrupting crop flows, with only a small portion of Russia's grain exports being rerouted through alternative ports. This is tightening supplies and prompting import-dependent buyers in Asia and Africa to seek alternative sources.
