Botswana's Copper Bet: $900M Expansion Sets New Standard
The investment landscape in Botswana's mining sector is undergoing significant changes. A recent capital commitment of US$900 million to expand the Khoemacau copper mine, a partnership between MMG and CNIC Corporation, has raised eyebrows in the industry.
This massive investment is not just a simple exploration or feasibility study, but a fully funded expansion with shovels already in the ground. The current guidance for 2026 stands at 48,000-53,000 tonnes of copper in concentrate per year, drawn from the Zone 5 underground mine and the Boseto processing plant.
The expansion targets approximately 130,000 tonnes annually, nearly tripling output. But what's more significant is that this expansion comes with a silver by-product, which will exceed 4 million ounces per year post-expansion. This adds a second revenue leg through the copper price cycle.
