Braun Declares New Energy Emergency, Extends Indiana Gas Tax Suspension
Indiana Governor Mike Braun has announced a new energy emergency, extending the suspension of the state's gas tax for at least another 30 days. The move is in response to disruptions in global energy distribution due to the conflict in Ukraine and Canadian wildfires affecting the Alberta Oil Sands Region.
The original suspension was implemented on April 8 following President Donald Trump's launch of the war with Iran, but it was set to expire on Friday as Braun previously stated he didn't have the power to continue the tax break without legislative approval.
Despite this limitation, Braun cited new conditions that warrant the extension. The governor emphasized his priority is affordability and that his previous suspensions resulted in Indiana having the cheapest gas in America for Hoosiers all summer.
