Brent Crude Poised for Breakout as Middle East Tensions Escalate
The oil market remains highly sensitive to Middle East tensions, which have escalated in recent times. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates a supply shortfall of 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd), with global oil inventories declining twice as fast as previously forecast.
Despite the IEA cutting its forecast for global demand growth by nearly 50% to 1.6 million bpd, production cuts by Gulf countries and supply disruptions continue to plague the market. Seaborne oil shipments from the region averaged an estimated 4.9 million bpd in the second quarter.
The risk of further escalation is growing, with Iran attacking targets in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, while the Yemeni Houthis threaten ships in the Red Sea. This has sparked fears that a much larger confrontation could erupt at any moment.
