Bulgargaz Botas Gas Imports Remain Below 6%
Bulgaria's state-controlled gas supplier Bulgargaz has been importing natural gas from Turkey under a controversial contract with Botas, but the volumes remain relatively small. According to data obtained by Factcheck.bg, between 2023 and 2025, Botas deliveries accounted for less than 6% of Bulgaria's total imports.
The agreement was signed in January 2023, following Russia's halt on gas supplies to Bulgaria in spring 2022. The contract gives Bulgargaz access to Turkey's gas transmission network and liquefied natural gas terminals. However, the deal has been criticized for being economically disadvantageous to Bulgaria.
Bulgargaz initially refused to disclose information about the quantities of gas delivered under the agreement and the amounts paid, citing Botas' objection. The company eventually provided data on deliveries over the past three years but still refused to reveal how much money had been paid.
