Bundesbank President Advocates Gold for Central Bank Reserves
Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel has argued that rising government debt levels make a compelling case for central banks to diversify their reserves by increasing gold holdings. Speaking on Monday, Nagel noted that the recent surge in global government bond yields has temporarily improved the appeal of debt securities. However, he cautioned that growing debt levels have heightened concerns about the credit risk associated with these assets.
Nagel also highlighted that geopolitical risks are likely to continue influencing reserve management decisions. His remarks suggest that central banks may need to reconsider their asset allocations in light of these evolving economic and political dynamics. The discussion around gold as a hedge against such risks has gained traction in recent years, particularly as traditional safe-haven assets face new challenges.
