Cambodia is planning to solve its clean energy deficit with a massive 900MW LNG power plant, according to Mines and Energy Minister Keo Rottanak. The project will be opened for a competitive bidding process, with several countries and companies already expressing interest.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Rottanak said that the proposed power plant will help reduce Cambodia's 30% shortfall in clean energy, which is expected to come from solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass. He added that the country needs several billion dollars more in development financing for generation, transmission, and storage infrastructure.

Rottanak emphasized that Cambodia is a strong advocate for the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), which aims to create an integrated regional market for cost-effective decarbonization. The minister also highlighted the importance of diversifying energy sources, citing the country's resilience to global fuel shortages and oil price hikes.

The government has been intervening to control the situation through fuel price reduction, customs import duties, and special taxes. Rottanak pledged continued support for households and industries until market conditions improve.
