Canada and France Strengthen Ties Amid Global Uncertainty
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and French President Emmanuel Macron have agreed to deepen their countries' ties in various strategic sectors, including space, defense, energy, and business. The meeting, which took place on Sunday, aims to expand cooperation between the two nations as Canada looks beyond the United States for new economic and security partners.
Carney emphasized that deeper ties with Europe would make Canada less vulnerable to economic coercion by any single country, citing US President Donald Trump's tariffs and demands for economic concessions. He also noted that Canada and Europe will build an alliance for the future to strengthen their collective resilience.
Macron welcomed Carney on Sunday at the airport of the French territory off Newfoundland's coast and highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral economic ties and defense relationships. He also emphasized the need to secure oil and gas supplies as the Iran war disrupts global energy markets, stating that Canada is a major oil and natural gas producer.
The leaders discussed deepening cooperation in aerospace, energy, critical minerals, and advanced technologies such as quantum computing, satellites, and supercomputing. Macron expressed interest in concluding agreements to secure more liquefied natural gas shipments to Europe's Atlantic coast.
