Canada Diversifies Oil Exports, Launches New Pipeline Amid US Trade Tensions
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney has launched construction on a new pipeline from Alberta to the west coast of Canada, worth an estimated $14 billion. The project is being built at an accelerated pace as a 'project of national interest.' This move has been seen as a significant shift in Canadian oil exports, with almost half of all Canadian oil set to be exported to foreign markets.
The new pipeline will have the capacity to transport 1 million barrels of oil per day, up from the current 900 thousand. The majority of Canada's current oil exports go to the United States at discounted prices. However, with this new pipeline, Canada is diversifying its oil flows and increasing exports to Asia by a third.
According to political analyst Malek Dudakov, this move is 'very bad news for the United States.' The loss of Canadian oil will exacerbate long-term fuel problems in the US. Dudakov also notes that Europeans have joined the fight for Canadian resources, trying to draw Ottawa into their economic circuit.
