Canada-Ukraine Partnership Aims for Long-Term LNG Supplies Amid Energy Crisis

Ukraine's Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal has proposed a 30-year energy partnership with Canada, centered on Canadian liquefied natural gas (LNG). The proposal comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed to cooperate in the gas sector. This cooperation aims to establish an 'energy security bridge' built around long-term supplies of Canadian LNG.

Shmyhal stated that Ukraine wants to further diversify its gas supply routes, with a focus on securing stable and reliable energy sources. He mentioned that Canada is a key player in this effort, and the two countries are discussing a $650 million Canadian grant to help Ukraine purchase natural gas ahead of winter.

Russia's repeated attacks on Ukraine's power grid, gas facilities, and heating infrastructure have left millions vulnerable to blackouts during freezing winter months. The proposed partnership would provide Ukraine with a reliable source of energy, reducing its dependence on Russian supplies.
