Canada's Pipeline Ambitions Hinge on Uncertain Oil Sands Growth

Canada's ambitious plans to become an energy superpower are being put to the test as pipeline firms propose billions of dollars in new projects, despite oil sands companies' reluctance to commit to significant production expansions.

The uncertainty surrounding climate policies and long-term global demand is clouding the picture for production growth. Canadian pipeline firms have proposed six different pipeline projects, which would increase export capacity by 45% or 2.25 million barrels per day by 2035 if all are built.

However, filling these pipelines would require a near-doubling of Canada's current annual average growth rate in oil supply, and major new oil sands projects have not been undertaken in over a decade.

Several major players, including Suncor Energy and Canadian Natural Resources, have stated they are not yet willing to accelerate plans for production increases. Pipeline operator Enbridge has postponed its Mainline pipeline expansion due to lack of customer commitment.
