Canadian Mining Stocks Tumble Amid Declining Metal Prices

Canadian mining stocks have been experiencing turbulence in September 2026, following a strong rally earlier this year. Copper futures fell as much as 5.4% on August 26, while silver had its worst day since June and gold prices slipped. This led to a decline in TSX mining stocks, with the materials group dropping 2.4%. The S&P/TSX Composite Index also slipped 0.4% that day.

The sell-off continued on September 10, with copper futures tumbling off their record high and silver falling nearly 6%. Gold slid roughly 2%, while platinum and palladium each dropped more than 6%. Investors were digesting several headwinds at once, including uncertainty over tariffs on refined copper, U.S. producer price data that pushed the odds of a September rate hike to around 70%, and rising oil prices tied to Middle East tensions.

Despite the recent wobble, Canadian resource stocks have had one of the best years in a generation. Mining stocks have made up 18 of the TSX's 30 top-performing stocks this year, driven by accelerating demand for metals such as copper due to electrification and artificial intelligence infrastructure. According to Jack Lundin, president and CEO of Lundin Mining (TSX: LUN), the copper market faces a projected shortfall of about 10 million tonnes by 2040.
