Capstone Copper Exits Mexico Mine to Focus on Core Assets
Capstone Copper (ASX:CSC) has taken a strategic step by agreeing to sell its Cozamin mine in Mexico to Luca Mining Corp, a move aimed at sharpening its focus on core assets in the Americas. The transaction, which includes upfront cash, Luca shares, deferred payments, and contingent payments tied to future copper prices, is expected to optimize Capstone's portfolio and strengthen its balance sheet. However, the deal is still subject to regulatory approvals and has not yet been completed.
The sale will allow Capstone to concentrate on its larger, longer-life operations in Arizona and Chile, including the Pinto Valley mine, Mantos Blancos, and Mantoverde. The company is also advancing the Santo Domingo development project in Chile, which requires significant funding. Proceeds from the Cozamin sale will support these growth initiatives.
Capstone's recent quarterly results showed record revenue and earnings, driven by higher copper prices. However, the company also reported rising unit costs due to lower production volumes and increased spending on diesel and sulphuric acid. The balance between cost control and copper price strength remains a key theme for investors to monitor.
The next major milestone for Capstone will be its third-quarter results, due later this month. The update is expected to provide fresh insights into production, costs, and progress at Mantoverde, as well as any changes in the timetable for completing the Cozamin divestment.
