Cardinal Energy's Reford Project Exceeds Expectations as Company Cuts Debt
Cardinal Energy Ltd (TSX:CJ) has been gaining attention in 2026 for its Reford thermal heavy-oil project, which has transitioned from construction to sustained production. The company's second-quarter results showed a 21% year-over-year increase in production to 25,636 boe/d, with medium and heavy oil making up 51% of the mix.
The Reford 1 project averaged 6,567 bbl/d in the quarter, exceeding its nameplate capacity for six consecutive months. Cardinal has also sanctioned the second phase of the project, Reford 2, which is expected to contribute meaningfully to corporate revenues in the fourth quarter of 2027.
The company reported net debt of $172.7 million as of the second quarter, down 39% from year-end 2025. Cardinal has maintained an unhedged crude oil pricing position, and its management expects to exit 2026 with net debt below levels projected in its original capital budget.
