Carney Government Pushes for West Coast Pipeline Designation
The Canadian government is moving forward with designating Alberta's proposed oil pipeline to the West Coast as a project of national interest, a move that could fast-track its approval process.
A notice published in the Canada Gazette on August 1 marks the start of a 30-day consultation period, during which the government will work with Alberta and British Columbia governments while consulting with Indigenous communities.
The pipeline would carry approximately one million barrels of crude oil per day along roughly 1,250 kilometres using a corridor similar to the existing Trans Mountain pipeline, according to the Alberta government. The proposed project aims to increase Canada's energy independence and global competitiveness.
However, critics argue that this designation is being made too quickly, without adequate oversight. Julia Levin, associate director of national climate with Environmental Defence, stated that the government is moving at 'breakneck speed' and avoiding 'due oversight.'
