Carney, Smith to Reveal Next Step for West Coast Pipeline
Today marks the deadline for Ottawa to officially designate a proposed West Coast pipeline from Alberta to British Columbia's south coast as a project of national interest.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Danielle Smith will make an announcement in Fort McMurray, where they'll be joined by Pembina Pipeline Corporation president and CEO Scott Burrows.
The pipeline would be owned by Trans Mountain, the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission, and Pembina Pipeline Corp. Trans Mountain Corporation would handle planning and construction, while Pembina Pipelines would act as a private sector partner with a 10% ownership stake in the construction and an option to purchase an additional 10% once the line is operational.
The estimated cost of the pipeline is between $35.2 billion and $43.7 billion and would carry upwards of one million barrels of crude oil from Bruderheim, Alta., near Edmonton, to a port south of Vancouver, for shipment to international markets.
