Chattogram Faces 40% Gas Deficit as Moheshkhali LNG Terminals Struggle

A severe gas shortage is affecting Chattogram in Bangladesh due to technical and weather-related issues at two LNG terminals in Moheshkhali.

The terminals, operated by Excelerate Energy and Summit LNG, have seen a combined supply of around 410 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) as of August 12th. However, this is only about 37% of their combined capacity of 1,100 mmcfd, resulting in a shortfall of approximately 63%.

The Excelerate Energy terminal has one boiler currently out of operation for maintenance, while the Summit LNG terminal's vessel cannot berth due to adverse weather conditions. This has delayed the unloading of new LNG, exacerbating the shortage.

The impact is being felt across Chattogram, with CNG refuelling stations, industries, and households struggling to cope with reduced gas supply. The city's daily demand stands at around 350mmcfd, while supply only reached 210mmcfd, a shortfall of about 40%.
