China Completes First National-Level Shale Oil Demonstration Zone

China has marked a significant milestone in its shale oil development by completing its first national-level demonstration zone. The Shengli Jiyang Shale Oil Demonstration Zone, located in East China's Shandong Province, covers an area of 7,300 square kilometers and marks a major exploration breakthrough.

Shale oil is considered an important unconventional resource, but it has complex geological conditions that make its development challenging. The demonstration zone was created to provide a replicable and scalable technical pathway for the large-scale development of similar resources in China.

The site has seen significant progress since 2021, with daily oil production rising from 100 tons to over 2,400 tons. The Jiyang shale oil resources have been estimated at 10.52 billion tons.
