China Taps Gold Reserves for 22nd Straight Month
China's central bank continues its gold buying spree, adding to its reserves for the 22nd consecutive month. According to data released by the People's Bank of China (PBOC), the country's gold holdings rose to 76.73 million troy ounces at the end of August, up from 76.08 million ounces in July.
The value of China's gold reserves surged to $350.08 billion, a $43.7 billion increase from July. However, it's essential to note that this jump is largely due to the rising market price of bullion rather than an actual increase in physical purchases during the month.
Beijing's buying spree can be attributed to its efforts to diversify its foreign-exchange reserves, which have traditionally been dominated by dollar-denominated assets. Gold offers a safe-haven asset with no sovereign credit risk and limited exposure to another country's financial system.
