Commodities Surge on Renewed Tensions and Hawkish Fed Speculation
The latest Commitments of Traders (COT) report shows that commodities experienced a strong surge in prices during the week ending September 1. The Bloomberg Commodity Index increased by 3.5%, driven mainly by energy, grains, and softs.
Renewed tensions in the Middle East boosted crude oil and refined products, while escalating attacks on agricultural export infrastructure supported key crops like wheat. The result was a sharp increase in the prices of these commodities, with energy jumping by 7.8% and grains rallying by 7.1%.
In metals, Kevin Warsh's hawkish speech at Jackson Hole triggered a reversal across both precious and industrial metals as markets speculated that the Fed may move closer to a rate hike on September 16.
