China's Anhui Jiuyi Expands Pyroxasulfone Production Capacity

Chinese chemical producer Anhui Jiuyi has expanded its production capacity for pyroxasulfone, an herbicide active ingredient used in corn, soybean, and wheat crops. The company's new facility will produce 600 tons of pyroxasulfone per year, increasing competition in the global market.

The segment had been dominated by Japan's Kumiai Chemical, which held key patents covering synthesis technologies. However, with major patents expiring, Chinese producers like Anhui Jiuyi have been able to develop a full production cycle for pyroxasulfone.

This development could put downward pressure on pyroxasulfone procurement prices and reduce the cost of finished herbicide products for farmers. The global pyroxasulfone market is estimated at around $400-500 million annually, with relatively low application rates of 60-210 grams of active ingredient per hectare.

Anhui Jiuyi's expansion could intensify price competition in the global herbicide market, particularly in combination products targeting resistant weeds. The company has already launched its first commercial pyroxasulfone-based product, LanNongLe, on the Chinese market.
