China's Central Bank Adds Record Amount of Gold to Reserves
The People's Bank of China (PBOC) has continued its aggressive gold buying spree, adding 650,000 ounces to its reserves in August. This marks the 22nd consecutive month of purchasing, a testament to the central bank's long-term strategy to bolster sovereign holdings.
This latest acquisition brings China's total official gold reserves to approximately 76.73 million ounces, valued at roughly $350.08 billion. The PBOC's motivation for this shift is a strategic move to diversify national reserves away from dollar-denominated assets and hedge against geopolitical risks.
The sustained sovereign demand has played a crucial role in providing a price floor for gold prices, which experienced a 10% recovery in August. However, investors should be aware of the ongoing tug-of-war in the gold market, with high bond yields and potential shifts in US Federal Reserve interest rate policies remaining significant risks.
