China's Copper Demand Slows, Copper Prices Take a Pause
Copper prices have taken a pause in their recent rally as demand signals from China soften. According to Commerzbank, the world's largest consumer of copper accounts for over half of global demand. The bank's analysts noted that while copper had enjoyed a strong run-up, the latest economic data from China suggests a cooling in industrial activity.
The official Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) has dipped below 50, indicating contraction rather than expansion. This has raised concerns about the strength of industrial demand for copper, which is widely used in construction, electronics, and electric vehicles.
Commerzbank's analysts noted that while copper prices had been supported by expectations of a global economic recovery and supply constraints, the latest Chinese data suggests that demand may not be as robust as previously hoped. This has led to a cautious tone in the market, with traders reassessing their positions.
