Chinese gold imports have reached their highest level in nearly a decade, according to data from China's General Administration of Customs.

The country, which ranks as the world's largest gold market, imported over 1,100 tonnes of gold worth $158.8 billion through the first eight months of 2026.

This is already far above the total imported in 2025 and has been fueled by strong investment demand, said Jinrui Futures Co. analyst Zijie Wu.

The yuan's strength since the beginning of this year has created favorable conditions for gold imports, allowing regulators to grant more generous approval quotas.
