China's Oil Market Dominance: A New Era of State-Controlled Energy

China's emergence as a key player in global energy markets was on full display during the recent Iran war. The country, once just the world's largest oil importer and refiner, has transformed into a state actor capable of deploying stockpiles, export controls, and strategic opacity to shape the market according to its own terms.

During the conflict, China reduced its seaborne crude imports by 44 percent, freeing up supply for other buyers and relieving pressure on global prices. However, its export restrictions on refined products had the opposite effect, magnifying the crisis in markets that rely on Chinese supplies.

China's ability to weather the conflict was due in part to its long-term energy diversification strategy. The country has made significant strides in electric vehicle adoption, with over 1 million barrels per day of oil demand displaced by EVs alone. Additionally, renewables now account for nearly half of China's installed power capacity.

The country also holds the world's largest oil reserves, estimated at 1.3 to 1.4 billion barrels. This vast stockpile allows Beijing to buy aggressively when prices are low and draw down inventories when supply falters or prices spike, effectively insulating itself from global market fluctuations.
