China's Oil Stockpile Helps Keep Prices Low Despite Ongoing Conflict
President Donald Trump has China to thank for keeping oil prices low, despite ongoing concerns about supply and demand. According to estimates from the US Energy Information Administration, China's president Xi Jinping has spent billions of dollars building the world's largest oil stockpile, reaching around 1.4 billion barrels by the end of 2026.
This strategic reserve was built as part of President Xi's effort to protect China from foreign supply risks and make self-reliance in the energy sector a key component of the country's latest five-year plan.
As a result, China's oil imports decreased, easing global demand and softening the upward price effects for countries like the US. Energy analysts credit Beijing's decreased imports as the single greatest factor impacting oil price moderation since the war began in February.
