Constanța Corridor Emerges as Best Route for Ukrainian Grain Exports
Ukrainian grain exports face significant challenges due to the ongoing war. The traditional route through Greater Odesa's ports is disrupted, forcing a detour via Romania's Constanța port or other alternative routes.
The southern corridor through Constanța has emerged as the most efficient and environmentally friendly option. With its proximity to Ukraine, short inland journey, and favorable location for transporting grain to traditional destination markets, it minimizes greenhouse gas emissions per tonne of cargo.
A study found that transporting one tonne of grain from Dornești to Constanța generates about 8.9 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent, compared to 12.2-12.4 kilograms from Záhony in Hungary or Sławków in Poland to Trieste.
Additionally, the Lower Danube allows for inland waterway transport, which is particularly valuable for bulk cargo due to its relatively low energy use per tonne. However, this route is not immune to disruption and may require rail alternatives during periods of low water or reduced permissible draught limits the load carried by each barge.
