Copper Paradox: Alaska's Vast Resources Remain Untapped Amid Record Prices

The state of Alaska holds large and high-grade copper deposits, but despite record prices and renewed interest, it produces virtually none. The situation is often referred to as the 'Alaska copper paradox.' Historically, Alaska's remote location made it difficult for investors to build infrastructure and connect the mines to markets.

Today, with technological advancements and growing demand for copper in electric vehicles, power grids, renewable generation, AI-driven data centers, defense systems, and rising standards of living in developing economies, there is a renewed interest in Alaska's copper potential. The Pentagon has invested in an Alaska copper mining company, the Trump administration approved the Ambler Road, and global mining giant BHP returned to Alaska in search of copper.

According to S&P Global Energy & Market Intelligence, annual copper demand will reach 42 million metric tons by 2040, a 50% rise from the 28 million metric tons consumed globally in 2025. However, based on current mines and projects, the firm foresees demand outpacing supply over the next 15 years, resulting in a potential 10-million-metric-ton annual shortfall by 2040.

Alaska hosts at least seven advanced exploration and development projects that collectively contain roughly 93.7 billion pounds of copper in measured, indicated, and inferred resources. However, only around 3.6 million pounds of copper per year is currently produced in Alaska as a byproduct at Hecla Mining Co.'s Greens Creek silver mine.
