Copper Price Plunge Sends Canadian Stocks into Free Fall
Canadian copper stocks took a hit on Thursday after copper prices plummeted from record highs. Ero Copper and HudBay Minerals, two prominent Canadian copper miners, led the decline, with shares falling 7.9% and 7.3%, respectively.
The sharp reversal in copper prices was attributed to uncertainty over U.S. tariffs on refined copper imports. The White House had yet to finalize its position on the matter, leaving investors concerned about potential higher manufacturing costs for U.S. producers.
Ero Copper had been climbing towards its 52-week high of CA$56.62 before the recent decline, while HudBay remained above its 52-week low of $18.00 despite Thursday's drop. The company's sensitivity to copper prices was highlighted by its operating assets across Canada, Peru, and the United States.
The abrupt commodity-price reversal left Canadian copper producers particularly exposed, with investors reassessing valuations across the mining sector.
