Copper Prices Soar Amid Weak Supply and Chinese Economic Boost
Copper prices have surged to record levels due to a perfect storm of supply and demand side developments. China's decision to inject $53.64 billion into insurers and banks is expected to boost lending and shore up the economy, which is good news for copper demand.
However, on the supply side, several major producers are struggling to meet expectations. Data from the International Copper Study Group shows that global mine output fell 1.1% in the first half of the year, with Codelco and Freeport-McMoRan Inc. posting double-digit declines.
Governments across Africa are also seeking greater control over their mineral wealth, which could impact supply and prices. By rewriting mining codes and demanding larger equity stakes, they may limit foreign investment in the industry.
