Cronos Gas Field to Fuel Europe from Cyprus via Egypt
TotalEnergies and Eni have made a final investment decision to develop the Cronos gas field offshore Cyprus. This project marks Cyprus' first natural gas development and will supply European markets through an existing LNG export route in Egypt.
The partners, who each hold a 50% interest in Block 6, expect production to begin in 2028. The Cronos field is expected to produce approximately 500 MMcfd of gas, equivalent to about 2.8 MMtpy of LNG. TotalEnergies will market half of the production, or around 1.4 MMtpy.
The project will utilize existing offshore and LNG infrastructure in Egypt, including facilities associated with the Zohr field. This approach is expected to reduce project costs and emissions while accelerating development.
TotalEnergies Chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné said that the project will establish Cyprus as a new natural gas supplier in the Eastern Mediterranean, strengthening LNG exports to Europe. He added that using existing infrastructure aligns with the company's strategy of developing lower-cost, lower-emission LNG projects.
