Crop Tour Insights Reveal Variability Across Corn Belt
The Pro Farmer Crop Tour provided valuable insights into the state of grain markets this week. Guests on the Rural Radio Network's Weekly Market Roundup discussed the tour's findings and their implications for farmers and investors.
Heather Ramsey, of The ARC Group, emphasized that the tour is useful because it covers a large share of the Corn Belt, but cautioned against comparing its figures directly with USDA data. She noted that Illinois appeared to be one of the bigger surprises, with the state not looking as strong as many expected.
The broader trend points lower than earlier expectations, but not toward a crop failure, according to Ramsey. Martin agreed that the tour's field observations mattered more than the final yield number and that the corn crop may not be a disaster, but soybeans continue to look like the stronger crop in many areas.
On soybeans, Ramsey highlighted several supportive factors competing for market attention, including export sales, China demand, biofuel usage, and the pace of soybean crush. She noted that Nebraska producers may be in a favorable position due to competition from processors, shuttle loaders, and end users for bushels.
