Crude Oil Price Plunges Amid Hawkish Fed Rate Hikes and Easing Supply Concerns

The crude oil price has been falling after the Federal Reserve's rate hike in September. On Wednesday, WTI crude dropped 3.28% to settle at $102.02 per barrel, while Brent crude fell 2.66% to $105.58 per barrel. The decline was not caused by a single factor but rather a combination of hawkish signals from the Federal Reserve, a stronger US dollar, an increase in US refined product inventories, and Saudi Arabia seeking alternative export channels.

The Federal Reserve raised the target range for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to 3.75%, 4.00% in September. This move was seen as hawkish, with 16 out of 18 officials supporting at least one more rate hike within the year. Chair Kevin Warsh described the move as removing a degree of policy accommodation and emphasized that inflation remains elevated.

The stronger US dollar has made crude oil more expensive for overseas buyers, weighing on demand. Higher interest rates also increase borrowing costs and may suppress economic activity, which could further affect energy demand growth. Saudi Arabia's expansion of alternative export routes has relieved market fears of a supply disruption, but the situation in the Middle East remains volatile.
