Cyprus is expected to become an alternative source of natural gas for Europe by March 2028, according to Energy Minister Michalis Damianos.

The Cypriot government has partnered with TotalEnergies and Eni to develop the Cronos gas field off Cyprus's southern coast, which will be the first time that gas from Eastern Mediterranean fields feeds European markets.

The project involves sending gas from Cronos to Egypt for processing, where it will be liquefied for shipment to Europe. The agreement includes a clause allowing about one-fifth of the gas volume to be used to cover part of Egypt's domestic energy needs.
