Design Doha's Mexico Residency Brings Tradition and Innovation Together
Design Doha has announced its return with the Mexico edition of 'Crafting Design Futures', a residency program that brings together designers from Qatar and the wider MENASA region with Mexican master artisans. This year's program builds on the inaugural residency held during the Qatar-Morocco 2024 Year of Culture, aiming to explore what inherited craft knowledge can offer contemporary design.
The four selected participants will work in family-run workshops, learning techniques passed down through generations, such as ancestral engraving and hand-hammered copper. They will create new works that blend traditional Mexican crafts with their own designs, which will be presented at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City from October 8 to November 1.
The program is part of Design Week Mexico's Visión y Tradición exhibition, which connects contemporary designers with artisan communities across Mexico through research, collaboration, and cultural exchange. Director of Design Doha Fahad Al Obaidly said that the residency aims to create a global network of designers and artisans who can challenge perspectives and inspire a new generation of design.
