Diesel Price Shockwave Hits Global Economy
The recent surge in diesel prices has gone largely unnoticed by the general public, but it's having a significant impact on industries that rely heavily on this fuel. Diesel is not just used for trucks and heavy machinery, but also for shipping, agriculture, and heating homes.
Nathan Bomey, a business reporter at Axios, explained to Today, Explained co-host Noel King that 'most products in America are shipped along the road via trucks' and that diesel prices directly affect their cost of doing business, which then trickles down and affects consumers.
The price spike is attributed to the US and Israel's attack on Iran, which disrupted the global energy economy by closing the Strait of Hormuz. This has affected not only diesel but also gasoline, jet fuel, and other products based on crude oil.
Truckers and farmers are already feeling the pinch, with their costs increasing significantly due to higher diesel prices. But it's not just them, as Bomey pointed out, 'the impact is imminent' and consumers will start noticing price increases in the grocery aisle within weeks or even days.
