Diesel Price Surge Threatens to Send Heating Bills Soaring
A surge in diesel prices is expected to lead to higher heating bills for millions of Americans in the Northeast this winter. According to William O'Neil, a principal research analyst at S&P Global, heating oil and diesel prices tend to move together due to their chemical similarity.
O'Neil estimates that Americans could end up paying nearly 50% more to heat their homes than last year, with residential heating oil prices potentially increasing by $2 per gallon. This would bring the average price to around $5-$6 per gallon.
The National Energy Assistance Directors Association projects a 31% increase in heating oil costs for this winter, with an estimated average household expenditure of $2,297 on heating oil alone.
