Diesel Prices Soar to Record High Amid Global Refined-Products Crisis

China's decision to cut back on refinery runs has created a crisis in the global diesel market, pushing prices to nearly double that of Brent crude oil. According to Jeff Currie, commodities strategist at Carlyle Group, this is not a classic crude shortage story but rather a refined-products crisis.

The surge in crude supplies in late June and early July left over 100 million barrels trapped inside the Strait of Hormuz due to ongoing disruptions. China responded by reducing refinery runs, which helped keep crude prices from spiking further but reduced the volume of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel entering global markets.

Currie noted that 'China did not solve the shortage. It moved it downstream.'

The result is a dislocation between crude and refined products, with crude looking relatively contained while fuels that power the real economy are in short supply. Global refinery crude throughputs remain nearly 5 million barrels per day below year-earlier levels, according to the International Energy Agency's August 2026 Oil Market Report.
