DNV Backs BW Offshore's Floating Blue Ammonia FPSO Concept
BW Offshore and McDermott have received Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV for their blue ammonia FPSO concept, a floating production, storage, and offloading unit designed to produce low-carbon ammonia.
The AiP assesses the concept's feasibility at an early stage and provides a basis for further design development, certification, and classification.
The FPSO would process up to 3 million cubic meters of natural gas per day and produce more than 1 million tonnes of ammonia annually. It would convert natural gas into hydrogen and then ammonia, with carbon capture technology capturing up to 99% of the CO2 generated during production.
The captured CO2 could be exported for geological sequestration or other approved uses, reducing emissions from the unit's operation.
BW Offshore plans to work with oil and gas developers and partners to progress the concept towards potential project execution, targeting offshore gas resources constrained by existing infrastructure.
