Dollar Gains on US-Iran Talks Optimism Amid Oil Price Decline
The US dollar has continued to strengthen in recent days due to optimism surrounding a potential deal to halt the conflict between the US and Iran. The meeting between US officials and Iranian officials at the UN General Assembly was described as 'very good' by those involved, with indirect negotiations taking place for three hours.
Retail gasoline prices in the US have risen 10% so far in September, nearing highs set in May. Diesel prices have surged even higher, up 15% and breaking above 2022 highs to reach a new record high.
The decline in crude oil prices has not yet translated into broader FX market movements, with US yields remaining elevated at 4.79%, the highest level since July 2024.
There is some skepticism surrounding the potential deal between the US and Iran, but the continued rise in energy prices may lead to more productive talks.
