The New York markets closed mixed on August 5, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average surging 433 points while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite fell 141 points.

The divergence between the Dow's strength and tech weakness suggests a rotation into cyclical and defensive names. The Dow rose 0.80% to 54,519.33, with 20 of its 30 components advancing and 10 declining.

Gold futures surged $142 to $4,294, reclaiming the $4,300 level, while crude oil futures extended losses, slipping $0.23. The precious metal hit an intraday high of $4,325.50, marking a gain of more than $200 from the previous close.

In currency markets, the dollar edged lower against the yen to 157.65.
