A drone attack on Egypt's Mediterranean port of Damietta has sparked concerns about energy infrastructure security in the region. According to Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, a regasification ship and a storage vessel were damaged in the attack. The incident occurred at the site of a liquefied natural gas hub.

The ministry stated that an initial investigation found the fire on the ships was caused by a drone attack on Wednesday. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. The damaged vessels are the Energos Winter floating storage and regasification unit and the GasLog Salem LNG tanker, according to trade intelligence firm Kpler.

The attack is part of a wider escalation in strikes on energy infrastructure across the Middle East. Iran, its Houthi allies in Yemen, and Iraqi militias have been targeting oil facilities, disrupting global supply chains. The Houthis declared a maritime embargo of Saudi Arabia last week, jeopardizing the kingdom's energy exports through the Red Sea.

The Saudis can redirect some oil through a pipeline that stretches across Egypt, but Riyadh would have to unload some oil at the pipeline and then retrieve it on the Mediterranean Coast because the Suez Canal is too shallow for fully loaded supertankers. The U.S. launched a renewed wave of strikes against Iran overnight in retaliation for an attempted surprise missile attack by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on American forces.

The situation highlights concerns about energy security near the Suez Canal, as well as the potential for further disruptions to global supply chains. Crude oil futures were trading slightly lower despite the escalation.
