Dutch Central Bank Dumps US Gold Reserves Amid Geopolitical Tensions
The Dutch central bank has relocated 86 tonnes of its gold reserves from the US and Canada to London, citing increasing 'geopolitical unrest' as a primary concern.
The move is aimed at making the reserves more readily available in case of a crisis. According to De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the Netherlands held 612.4 tonnes of gold worth €72.2 billion ($83.7 billion) at the end of 2025, with 31.3 percent stored in New York and 19.7 percent in Ottawa.
The share of Dutch gold stored in London has increased from 18.1 percent to 32.1 percent after the transfer, while 30.8 percent of the reserves remain in the Netherlands.
DNB completed the operation through a combination of buying and selling gold and physically transferring part of its reserves. The bank physically moved more than 27 tonnes of gold from the US and Canada to Zeist in the Netherlands before transporting it to London, avoiding melting down gold bars in the process.
