Dutch Central Bank Shifts Gold Holdings Amid Geopolitical Unrest

The Dutch Central Bank has repositioned part of its national gold stockpile by moving 86 tonnes of bullion from North America to London, citing increasing geopolitical unrest. The bank's decision is aimed at bolstering the country's financial resilience and ensuring faster access to liquidity in case of a crisis.

According to De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the shift was driven by the need for more immediate availability of gold reserves. The bank explained that gold held in London can be traded far more readily than reserves stored across the Atlantic, making it quicker to deploy in a crisis situation.

The operation involved both financial transactions and physical movement of bullion. DNB sold approximately 59 tonnes of gold in New York and purchased an equivalent amount in London that meets international market standards. In parallel, more than 27 tonnes of physical gold was transported from the United States and Canada to the bank's cash center in Zeist, near Utrecht.

Laurent Schwartz, president of the Paris-based National Gold Counter, noted that the Dutch move fits a broader pattern of central banks diversifying their storage locations. He added that London's market depth gives central banks flexibility that other locations cannot match.
