Egypt Cracks Down on Energy Production Hurdles
The Egyptian government is intensifying its efforts to boost oil and gas production as well as investment in the sector. Planning and Economic Development Minister Ahmed Rostom and Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi held a meeting to review performance indicators for the petroleum sector, which showed positive growth rates.
Rostom highlighted the pivotal role of the petroleum sector in meeting domestic energy needs, supporting various productive activities, and contributing to economic growth. He praised the sector's high growth rates, particularly in refining activity, which grew by 22.4% in the third quarter of FY2025/2026.
Badawi emphasized that increasing domestic oil and gas production is a top priority through the development of existing fields and intensified exploration for new discoveries. He also highlighted efforts to expand natural gas connections to homes as an alternative to butane cylinders, convert vehicles to run on natural gas, and increase the number of natural gas filling stations.
The meeting also reviewed the ministry's strategy to diversify energy sources by increasing the contribution of renewable energy to electricity generation, reducing gas consumption, and helping lower the gas import bill. The government aims to strengthen Egypt's role as a regional energy hub through projects to connect Cypriot gas fields to Egyptian infrastructure.
