Egypt's Wheat Import Market Constrained by Black Sea Logistical Issues
Global wheat import markets are facing tighter supply conditions due to logistical constraints around the Black Sea. This is causing higher import costs and limiting purchasing options for wheat importers. The CIF East Med assessment for Egyptian 12.5% protein wheat reached a record $301 per metric ton on August 26, according to S&P Global.
The situation is particularly relevant for Egypt's private grain market, where inventories are estimated at around 500,000 metric tons. With demand expected to increase, changes in import availability and pricing will be important for buyers as they plan their next purchases.
However, the market has a substantial public sector buffer. Government stocks are estimated to cover around six months, while local purchases from farmers reached about 5 million metric tons, a record level according to S&P Global.
