El Nino and Oil Volatility Threaten India's Wholesale Inflation
India's wholesale inflation may remain elevated in the coming months due to various external factors. The country's dependence on imported goods and food items makes it vulnerable to fluctuations in global energy prices, insurance costs, and weather patterns.
According to Sonal Badhan, an economist at Bank of Baroda, the outlook for global energy prices remains uncertain due to geopolitical tensions and threats to key shipping routes. This volatility is expected to increase oil prices, leading to higher transportation and manufacturing costs in India.
The El Nino phenomenon is also expected to intensify during August and September, potentially keeping food inflation elevated. Food inflation has been a major contributor to the country's wholesale price index (WPI), with fruits, milk, eggs, and meat products registering significant increases.
Badhan pointed out that higher insurance premiums could further increase freight costs and feed into the prices of imported goods. The effects of these factors are already visible in the data, with the WPI standing at 9.8% in July, driven by fuel, food, and manufactured products.
