El Niño Brings Drier Weather to Corn Belt Farmers
Corn Belt farmers are in for a potentially drier stretch of weather as El Niño builds across the U.S. farm belt, according to AgroLatam.
A shift towards fewer prolonged rain events and warmer fall temperatures could increase the number of days suitable for fieldwork, allowing producers to accelerate corn and soybean harvest while reducing grain-drying requirements and potential losses.
Meteorologists do not expect persistent heavy rainfall patterns to dominate the coming weeks, but individual heavy rain events can still occur. A few additional dry days can improve harvest efficiency, particularly where saturated soils have restricted combine movement.
The El Niño event is expected to strengthen into a very strong event during fall and winter 2026-27, with a 75% chance of reaching an exceptional intensity relative to the historical record since 1950.
