El Niño Looms Large, Fueling Grain Market Uncertainty
Global grain markets are experiencing a surge in prices due to uncertainty and weather concerns. Australia's wheat and barley crops have stellar yield prospects, but their early development puts them at risk of damage from frost or heat stress.
The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts a strong El Niño event, which could impact yield prospects. Growers are cautious about selling forward, waiting for more information on the season.
Prices for wheat and barley in Queensland and northern NSW have been firming, but growers are not selling, according to Sunrise Commodities managing director Scott Merson. Consumers, including feedlots, are mostly covered into new crop, leaving 2027 business to the trade.
