End of an Era: Norman Wells' 106-Year Oil Run Comes to a Close
Norman Wells in Canada's Northwest Territories has come to the end of its oil production era after 106 years. Imperial Oil shut down operations on August 14, citing declining production and a previously announced plan to wind down activities.
A commemorative event was held in the town over the weekend, which featured speeches, performances by local drummers and musicians, and displays of community heritage. The company has been present in Norman Wells since 1919, when it first struck oil at its Discovery well.
Imperial Oil's site in Norman Wells is a large oil and natural gas production facility that includes several islands in the river. The company provided around $6 million in property taxes annually to the town, accounting for approximately 70 percent of the municipality's budget.
